Why would you choose to cut your royalties in half?

Kindle Publishing Roadmap

Your questions answered: taking the confusion out of ebook publishing with Amazon.

Amazon offers self-published authors a choice of royalties — a choice between a 35 percent and a 70 percent royalty. The mathematically astute will have noticed that a 35 percent royalty is half as much as a 70 percent royalty. So why would you choose to halve your royalities?

The question of how to choose between Kindle royalty options is one I get asked frequently. It’s already covered in this blog in the Kindle royalties: 35% or 70% Amazon royalty option?, which also includes my Kindle royalties calculator. It’s also covered in the Kindle Publishing Roadmap, my seminar on how to publish your ebook on the Kindle.

At the seminar this portion attracts lots of discussion, because it’s not intuitively understood why you might choose 35% over 70%. What’s also not easy to understand are the conditions Amazon attaches to self-publishing authors who choose the 70 per cent option.

The seminar is available for download from this site but thought it would be helpful if I extracted part of the discussion on Amazon royalties and included here for free as a podcast.

This is about five minutes of a two-hour session that covers everything you need to understand about self-publishing for the Kindle. With the Roadmap you also get the seminar handout and a complete transcript of the session to use for reference.
